The Depression Epidemic and How Kundalini Yoga Can Help.

Sadness and grief are normal human emotions that all of us experience at some stage in our lives, but they usually go away within a few days or months and we learn to cope. Depression that comes back or lingers on is completely different, a sense of overwhelming sadness creeps in, a complete loss of interest in friends family and pretty much anything to do with life that would normally bring you pleasure and happiness.
A close friend of mine would often go quiet at times and I would know instantly that something was up, but no matter what I said or tried to do to put a smile on their face I would simply make it worse. All they would want is to be is left alone in their darkness.
There are many types of depression on variable levels; "Major depression", "mild depression", "persistent depressive disorder", where depression lasts over a period of years, "bipolar depression", where extreme highs of happiness to severe bouts of low are experienced and we're presented with a completely different person from one day to the next.
We often hear of SAD "Seasonal affective disorder’’ where mood is affected by the sun or lack of it, making winter in the UK a tough time for anyone who suffers with low moods. "Postpartum depression’’ which involves mothers of new born children being effected by hormonal changes due to giving birth, lack of sleep and the overwhelming responsibility of mothering a baby.
350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. 350 MILLION!!. This is a figure that is simply too hard to comprehend. That is 5% of the worlds population, making depression the leading cause of disability in the modern world today. In my mind that is a crazy statistic to digest and one that I would like to help to reduce.
8% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 22 have been reported to suffer and struggle with various forms of depression and suicide is the leading cause of death in young men between 20-34 years old in the UK. And those figures are rising. Fast.
In these times we are living in, technology is more powerful than ever before, people are earning more money than previous years, living standards are up, we are living longer, there are more options available to us, we can buy pretty much anything we want and yet our minds cannot seem to cope. We're finding life harder, levels of happiness, connection and fulfilment are dropping drastically and stress, depression and anxiety are becoming the norm.
Its a sad thought and it makes me want to find a solution.
Hormones, genetics and brain chemistry are just some of the factors that bring on depression, as well as physical or sexual abuse, alcohol or drug abuse or even major diseases including cancer or diabetes.
CURRENT TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION.
So, you go to your doctor and explain how you feel, he/she asses you and diagnoses you with depression, then what happens? Well they put you on a dose of drugs of course. Antidepressant medication they call it - basically a quick fix to get you back on track and maybe some counselling for good measure too. But it is not a quick fix, people become addicted to these antidepressants, relying on them on a daily basis and causing many long-term, adverse health affects. Now, I'm not saying all depressants are bad, because in many cases modern medicine provides a very real and very valuable treatment for those in need, but all too readily these drugs are handed out & the affect is a population that are dulled and numbed, taking a drug that doesn't treat the cause of the problem or the underlying issue.
But what can we do?
Being aware of depression is the first thing we all need work on, from the person dealing with depression to friends and family that witness the depression in the ones we love, but don't know what to do or say.
I wanted to write this blog as I personally find myself witnessing depression and anxiety in my friends. I often hear of people struggling and not knowing where to turn to next, friends of family, teenagers and the elderly. I experience it every day and I find it extremely sad to see.
Recently, I have taken up a year long teacher trying course in Kundalini Yoga, where I get to learn all about the anatomy, the nervous system, the pituitary glands and more. I'm learning how to stimulate certain organs and areas within the body that can eliminate this horrendous disease. I am already 7 weeks into my training and am astounded as to what I am learning, already feeling a sense of relief about how we can all do our bit to rid this unwanted emotion. I cannot wait to finish my course and get to work.

We'll show you the moves and meditations that have helped us and those around us, plus the insider tips that make us happy and keep the dark moods under control.
Our aim? Simply to help as many people as we can to come out of the darkness and find a little light in their life, through natural and simple methods. Maybe, just maybe some of us could be that little ray of sunshine for someone suffering with depression or anxiety..
