Same, Same - but different!

Posted on 12 April 2012

Sometimes, working in India can be completely exasperating.  There’s been a few moments where I’ve had a complete meltdown, a good cry & would have loved to have jumped on the first plane home & run back to my career in film & television. I’m trying to source as much as I possible locally, using smaller companies rather than huge global businesses, but finding someone who could produce a small woven label with my logo on has been tricky.  I’d place orders with people which would never arrive & when I tried to contact them, their phones were no longer in use.  I’d spend weeks going through designs with someone, only at the end to be told they don’t make labels.  Why didn’t they just say that at the beginning!! Eventually Ashok & I found the man for the job.  The label design was sent over, samples approved and an order placed.  The order was meant to take 3 days – it took 2 weeks!  By this time we were really behind schedule on production as the pockets of the trousers & matching bags can’t be sewn until the label is in place.  We had piles & piles of unfinished trousers stacking up & no way of finishing them, so I went back to Goa where at least I could get on with some other work. I hadn’t heard anything from Ashok for a few days which was strange, so I rang him up to see if the labels had arrived.  I was told that they had arrived, that they looked perfect & that he’d already sewn them into 400 pairs of trousers.  This worried me slightly as I still haven’t seen the finished label so asked Ashok to send over a picture asap…… When the blurry, out of focus picture arrived in my inbox, my fears were confirmed.  The label said MARZIPANTS & it was white with black text, but that’s where the similarities ended.  Cue a rather tense phonecall with Ashok where I was told that the label was “same, same” as my logo.  After ½ hour of arguing that my logo on the label wasn’t actually anything to do with Marzipants, or my brand, he agreed that the label was “same, same – little bit different”.  He tried to convince me that I should keep the label as “it is looking very nice”, but I wasn’t having any of it & told him to unpick the trousers & get hold of the label man, pronto.
[caption id="attachment_471" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The "very nice looking" logo I was sent"][/caption] Of course the label man was unable to talk to us for 4 days as he was “busy helping other customers”, but eventually he got hold of us to tell us that he’d studied both the label & my log & they were “same, same”.  Cut to the same argument I had with Ashok, above & eventually, after 2 days of arguing down the phone, he agreed that they were “same, same – but a little bit different”.  He even tried to tell me that the re-branding he’d done on my company was actually pretty good & that I should be very pleased & even possible paying a bit extra for the privilage!!!!  Luckily, I wasn’t anywhere near him at this point as I’d have happily battered him round the head with his rolls of labels until I did some real damage! [caption id="attachment_472" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption=""same same - little bit different!!!!!!!!!""][/caption] So, we had to wait another 2 weeks for the new labels arrived (by this point we’re a month behind schedule), but when they did finally arrive, they were perfect and not even a little bit different, just same same!
